GPL Match day 3: Hearts win, Kotoko lose as Aduana cruise to top spot

Matchday three of the Ghana Premier came to life on Sunday as eight games took place across various league centres, with one on Saturday.
The matchday kicked off with a game at the Carl Reindolf Park in Dansoman, with Liberty Professionals hosting Medeama. The home side took the lead and held it for a greater part of the time until Medeama equalized within the last twenty minutes to rescue a point.
In Accra, Hearts of Oak were able to claim their first win of the season over Ebusua Dwarfs at home after scoring from two magnificent free-kicks. Joseph Esso scored the first from a close range and Kofi Kodzie added the second in the second half. Dwarfs were able to pull one back after a brilliant-cut through the Phobian defence to set Albert Ato Hammond up for a goal. Interim coach of Hearts, Nii Odoom says he wasn’t surprised they scored from set-pieces because they spent half an hour on that in training the previous day. He hopes to build on this performance and allow the players to grow in confidence.
On the other side, Asante Kotoko was stunned at home to Berekum Chelsea. They lost by a goal to nil. Chelsea has now beaten both Hearts and Kotoko away from home and that sends a strong signal to other opponents. Coach Konadu has said that he has identified the need to get a striker for the team as the team lacks a cutting edge forward. Their next game is away to free-scoring Medeama in Tarkwa.
Aduana Stars have now moved up the league log with three wins out of three and has done so by the help of their brilliant forward, Yahaya Mohammed. Yahaya stroke twice as they defeated King Faisal at home. They have been closely matched by Ashgold who have also won all three games and are even yet to concede a goal. The miners believe they are amongst title contenders and is doing everything to keep that status. They defeated Eleven Wonders of Techiman by two goals at the Len Clay Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Great Olympics, King Faisal and Ebusua Dwarfs are still yet to gather any points after matchday three. Already, pundits have started drawing the lines as to who could be on the chopping board.

CK Akonnor wins dismissal case against Kotoko, Ghanaian giants ordered to pay compensation

Asante Kotoko are expected to CK Akonnor a hefty compensation after the former coach won his case for wrongful dismissal against the club on Monday. The Player Status Committee has ruled the Porcupine Warriors breached the terms of his contract. The ex-Ghana international was sacked in July this year, just nine months into his three-year contract. He dragged the club to the Ghana Football Association demanding his 2 years salary, league trophy cash, and CAF Confederations Cup group stage entitlements. The Player Status Committee ruled that the club was not justified in terminating the contract of the former Hearts of Oak gaffer. Both parties are yet to be furnished with a copy of the ruling. Akonnor rejected an offer to head the club’s technical directorate and left his post under bitter circumstances. The gaffer had been in charge for a close to a year having had stints with Kotoko sworn rivals Hearts of Oak and regional rivals Ashantigold. He had also coached D...

Today In History: Kwame Nkrumah arrives in Guinea After the Coup

When news of the coup reached him, Nkrumah was in Peking (today’s Beijing) en route to the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, with plans to end the American war in Vietnam. Leaders of four African countries sent Nkrumah immediate messages of support and invitations. They were the presidents of Egypt (Gamal Abdel Nasser), Mali (Modibo Keita), Guinea (Sekou Toure), and Tanzania (Julius Nyerere). Nkrumah decided to accept Sekou Toure’s invitation. The government of Guinea shared Nkrumah’s Pan-African objectives, encompassing the liberation of the African people from all forms of social injustice and economic exploitation. There also existed a strong brotherly bond between Nkrumah and Sekou Toure. In addition, Guinea was closest to Ghana, to where Nkrumah was determined to return to carry on his work. Sekou Toure came to the rescue of Kwame Nkrumah, the deposed of Ghana and invited him to Guinea where he arrived on March 2, 1966, together with his bodyguards and a few civil servants w...
